For whatever reason The Red Cup, a viral campaign produced from Starbucks, completely passed me by this holiday season. This film is the tale of a gentlemen who boards a taxi only to leave his coffee on top of the the cab. Somehow the cup manages to stay on throughout their trip until it's snached by a naughty santa. Well Starbucks has taken the video out of the film studio and into reel life (couldn't pass on that one - sorry!).
Starbucks, working with Clear Channel Taxi Media in Boston, have magnetically attached the red "venti" cups to the roofs of cabs citywide. Here's the story as reported by the Boston Globe:
An official with Clear Channel, which advertises on 2,000 cabs in Boston, says the rooftop Starbucks ad was offered to a select number of cabs from a few companies. ``It creates a little buzz and excitement,'' said Michael MacDonald, a regional vice president for the company. ``It makes people look twice.''
While the rooftop ad has received significant praise, some drivers say it is so effective it actually creates a maddening distraction from people who point, beep and yell when they see it.
``It's a real pain for the driver,'' Meister said. ``People will stand in traffic and yell, `Hey, you left your coffee cup on the roof!' ''
